Clemson’s Evie Tate and Louisville’s Rachel Pease stopped short of the finish line to help a fallen runner finish the last of the women’s 6K event in Cary, N.C. The two helped Boston College’s Madeline Adams, who was battling exhaustion in the finishing straight.

Both sacrificed their position in the race to help the fallen runner. Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) organizers were able to capture the moment on video, which has been shared thousands of times on social media.

Officials attended to Adams after she was able to cross the finish line. One user on Facebook commented that a previous rule has been updated so runners who help others during a race are not automatically disqualified.

According to the ACC race report, Tate was in the pack of runners who finished between 70th and 80th before stopping to help Adams. However, the report does not relay the fact that Adams is listed as being disqualified in the race results.

The ACC Cross-Country Championships are a conference meet in the United States for division one athletes. Regionals and nationals follow in the coming weeks for American universities. Canadian Justyn Knight, one of the country’s top distance runners, won the men’s 8K in 22:50 on Friday.
