Turkey burgers for your fall running diet

Tukey Burgers
Turkey Burgers

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, which for many means turkey dinner, but you shouldn’t need a holiday as an excuse to fill up on a healthy alternative to chicken.

One of the main benefits of turkey is the amount of protein in it. There are few foods that offer more protein per calorie than turkey, so some in the evening with dinner, after a tough workout, is a great choice to help your body recover and get ready for the rest of the week. It also contains every B vitamin, which are also important in recovery.

One of the reasons turkey isn’t as practical as chicken is the size it comes in. There are few practical cuts for a single serving, or even in small family. Turkeys are large birds and serve parties well, but there are some great other options fore eating, the main being ground turkey.

This fall, try making your own turkey burgers and enjoy the lean, protein-packed meat on more days than just Thanksgiving. Recipes vary — and you can change to suit your needs — but most are pretty simple to make quickly.

Mix about 3 lbs of lean ground turkey with finely chopped onion, parsley and garlic. Other seasoning is also recommended, but avoid using spices that contain salt, as it pulls the moisture from the meat. Plain, fresh black pepper is a great option. Crack and mix one egg into the mix and add a dash of Worcestershire sauce and form the burgers. Some like to add dried bread crumbs.

Cook the burgers on low heat and only flip them once.
