Katelyn Tuohy runs a historic national XC three-peat

Tuohy finishes her tightest race ever, securing her third NXN title

Katelyn Tuohy is the American highschooler who refuses to slow down. The North Rockland High School student became the first woman to win three consecutive Nike Cross Nationals titles (which are the American national high school championships).

But unlike nearly every other high school race Tuohy has run, she was being chased to the finish line. The New York native, who’s been undefeated since grade nine, nearly lost her last high school cross-country race–but in the end she held on.

Tuohy crossed the line in 17:18.4. Second place went to Ohio’s Taylor Ewert in 17:19.1 and third to Sydney Thorvaldson of Wyoming in 17:19.4. It was extremely tight, but Tuohy ran well, once again securing a national title.

Fans are calling Saturday Touhy’s most impressive race yet, despite it being her smallest margin of victory. Kyle Merber, a 3:54 miler, said on Twitter, “IMO that was the most impressive win of Katelyn Tuohy’s career. It’s one thing to just be way better than everyone else, but with all the pressure on her, to get caught and then to respond–shows more than just talent.”

The runner said post-race that this year was more challenging. “This year I was really stressed out before the race and it kind of affected how I felt during the race. But I’m just really happy that I was able to mentally tough it out the last 200 meters because I was really hurting.”

Tuohy has yet to commit to a college or university, but has announced her intent on running the 5,000m at the US Olympic Trials this June.
