Supporting the Terry Fox Foundation through virtual challenges

The Train With Terry Challenge will help participants prepare for the annual charity run, which is set to take place on September 20

The 2020 Terry Fox Run will look a little bit different than past editions of the event. Due to COVID-19, the run cannot be held in towns across the country, but Canadians can still participate in a virtual event on September 20. In addition to the run, there was the Mt. Terry Fox Trek (which took place on August 15) and there will be a Terry Fox Ride of Hope, a cycling event which is set for August 22. Anyone looking to participate in the ride or run (or both) can join the Train With Terry Challenge — a “warmup” for the foundation’s main event that begins on August 23 and carries on until the September run date.

The warmup challenges

From July 28 to August 14, the foundation’s first warmup — the Try Like Terry Challenge — was held. This challenge was “geared at getting [participants] onboard and ready to start participating in our upcoming events.” While the Try Like Terry Challenge is complete, there’s still time to join the Train With Terry Challenge. To participate, download the Terry Fox Foundation App and start training for the 2020 Terry Fox Run

The 2020 Terry Fox events

This year marked the sixth anniversary of the Mt. Terry Fox Trek. In a normal year, participants travelled to Valemount, B.C., where they hiked Mount Terry Fox together and raised money for cancer research. This year, instead of hiking in one specific location, participants got the chance to trek wherever they live and still support the Terry Fox Foundation.

Next up on the schedule is the Terry Fox Ride of Hope on August 22. The goal for this event is to collectively ride 40,000 kilometres, the circumference of the globe, on the 40th anniversary of Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Participants can ride as far as they please, whether that’s a short 5K loop or a long 200K ride. Finally, there is the event that every Canadian is familiar with — the Terry Fox Run. Everyone can participate and continue to support the Terry Fox Foundation virtually for the 40th anniversary of Fox’s cross-country run.
