The Halifax Road Hammers hosted Halifax’s first-ever Chase the Pace event on Friday evening at the St. Mary’s University track.

Inspired by a similar event hosted by Rob Watson’s training group Mile2Marathon in Vancouver for the past three years, HRH head coach Lee McCarron wanted to put together a fun evening of 5K time trials for people who may never have raced on a track.

Community sponsors including Lululemon, Aerobics First, Cove Kombucha and Garrison Brewery got on board, providing everything from branded shirts to track-side refreshments, to the post-race party at the brewery.

Eighty-two people showed up to race. There were five heats of 16 to 20 people per heat, with at least one volunteer pacer per heat. Heats were run every 20 to 25 minutes.

Best of all, the weather co-operated.

“I’d love to do this twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall,” says McCarron. “It’s nice to do something different.”

The evening included an effort by joggler Michael Bergeron to capture the Guinness World Record for joggling a 5K, but he came up five seconds over the 16:51 record. (Bergeron won the 5K at the Blue Nose Marathon last month, while joggling.)
