After a standout final season at the University of Washington in Seattle, Vaucouver’s Kieran Lumb has turned pro. On Friday, he announced on Instagram that he has joined forces with Swiss running brand On. Lumb is the second-fastest indoor miler in Canadian history, holding a personal best of 3:52.62, and is coming off a spectacular university track and field career at the U Sports and NCAA level.

“I am thrilled to announce that I have signed with On,” wrote Lumb on Instagram. “Thank you so much to everyone who has made this journey possible. I am excited to run for On in this next chapter of my career and be a part of what they are doing for the sport.”

Lumb follows in the footsteps of Canadian 5K record holder Ben Flanagan, becoming the second Canadian man to run for the brand.

Last weekend, he opened up his 2023 outdoor season with a 13:27 over 5,000m at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. Lumb runs distances 1,500m to 5,000m, and is looking to qualify for his first senior national team at a major championship.

In 2019, Lumb won the Canadian U Sports XC Championship outright as a second-year student at UBC. In 2020, Lumb transferred to the University of Washington, where he won the 2021 NCAA West Region Championship and broke a school record in the indoor 3,000m.

Lumb who won the NCAA West Region cross country championship in the fall, taking control of the race early and never looked back, and running the third-fastest mile time in Washington Husky history and the ninth-fastest mile in Dempsey Indoor history.

Growing up, Lumb was a nationally-ranked junior cross-country skier until his Grade 12 year. In his first year at UBC, he began his running career on the trails and the track.

The 24-year-old is now one of Canada’s top up-and-coming distance runners and will be a name to watch as we inch closer to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
