The Army Run, one of Canada’s fastest growing events, is hoping to pass the $1 million fundraising threshold in only their seventh year.

Last year, after donations had been counted, the total money raised by the event since its inception was nearly $800,000, and last year’s races alone raised $310,000. The event, which features a half-marathon and 5K, raises money for Soldier On and the Military Families Fund.

The Army Run sold out for this Sunday’s race early in August, even after expanding their total number of bibs offered by 3,000, divided between the 5K and half-marathon distances. In total, the Ottawa event will see 25,000 runners this year.

The event is unique from others in Canada in that many men and women who serve in the Armed Forces race in uniform. The starting gun is a cannon shot and many notable figures from the Canadian government and military often come out in support, even if they themselves are not runners.

This year, Governor General David Johnston (an avid runner) will be in attendance. Rideau Hall, the home and workplace of the Governor General, will be open to the public for cheering, as it is also being included in the half-marathon course.

“We are thrilled this year to extend an invitation to the public to join us on-site at Rideau Hall, the home of the people of Canada, to cheer on half-marathon participants as they make their way through the grounds,” said Johnston. “Their determination in putting their minds, bodies and souls through such a physical and demanding challenge for a great cause is truly inspiring. They deserve our utmost encouragement.”

The races will start at Elgin Street and Laurier Avenue in Ottawa on Sunday.
