Ed Whitlock, an 85-year-old resident of Milton, Ont., continued his incredible streak of races on Friday setting a new world record in the men’s 85-and-over mile by running 7:18.55. The June 10 record comes less than two months after he shattered the men’s 85-plus half-marathon world record by nine minutes in Waterloo, Ont. Though he admits he has cut back his mileage in recent years, he still continues to perform at a high level given his age.

Whitlock was the star of the event as people congratulated him after the race and got his autograph. The record was set during the men’s 50-and-over mile race in Cambridge. A mile is 1,609 metres and the race was run on the red, crushed clay track at Galt Collegiate Institute.

The British-born masters runner holds a remarkable range of world records including in the marathon (M70, M75 and M80) down to the 1,500m (M80) including many in between.
