Gabriela Debues-Stafford sets indoor 3,000m national record
Debues-Stafford won the women's 3,000m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in 8:33.92
Canada’s Gabriela Debues-Stafford was the star of the show at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Sunday in Staten Island. The Toronto native won the women’s 3,000m in a new national record time of 8:33.92, followed by her fellow Canuck Julie-Anne Staehli, who finished fourth in a new personal best of 8:43.55 (which was also below Jessica O’Connell’s previous national record of 8:46.50.
Gabriela DeBues-Stafford uses a huge 29.04 final lap to slash over 12 seconds off the Canadian indoor 3000m record, running 8:33.92.

Gabriela DeBues-Stafford sets two national records in one race
The women’s 3,000m
Ethiopia’s Mekides Abebe lead the race from the start, holding the lead for the majority of the race. Debues-Stafford remained patient, staying within striking distance and waiting for the right time to make her move. She moved up into third after the first kilometre, where she remained until unleashing a killer 29-second final 200 metres to pass Abebe and break the tape in a new personal best and national record time of 8:33.92. For those who aren’t counting, this brings her total current national records up to a seven.
Staehli also ran a smart race, starting in seventh and slowly working her way up the field to catch up to her fellow Canadian. Like Debues-Stafford, she cranked up the pace in a final bid for a podium finish, running 30.81 in the last 200m to finish fourth in 8:43.55 behind American Josette Norris, who took the third-place spot in 8:37.91. Abebe was second in 8:36.31.
Other Canadian results
Canadian Olympian Khamica Bingham ran a strong race in the women’s 60m, finishing in sixth place in 7.24 seconds, a season’s best. Phil Osei also ran a season’s best in the men’s 400m and finished fourth in 46.59. Michelle Harrison rounded out the Canadian sprinters, running 8.32 in the women’s 60m hurdles for sixth place. Edmonton’s Marco Arop ran 3:59.66 in the men’s mile to finish in eighth place.
