The winter running bucket list

winter shoes

Winter hasn’t exactly arrived for all Canadians yet. Sure, there are areas of Canada where runners have already had to reach for insulted jackets and neck warmers but for many, December has been incredibly mild. We were expecting to be running in snow by now but that’s not the case. This extended fall means that you can start looking forward to when the cold weather and snow actually do arrive. Just like we did with fall, we’re creating a winter running bucket list. Here’s what runners can look forward to:

1. Try a new cross training activity. Does your training consist of mostly just running? Shake it up! Winter is the perfect time to plan a few cross training activities. That’s because there is bound to be at least a few days where cross-country skiingit’s just too darn cold to get out. Instead, visit the gym or studio to get in the workout. Need ideas? We recommend cross-fit, swimming, cycling, or yoga.

2. Get a set of cross-country skis. There is a portion of runners who forgo the long runs in winter in favour of the cross-country skis. Never tried it? This winter may just be the time to start. Take in the gorgeous scenery at the nearest trails, just make sure to dress for a prolonged period spent outdoors because likely, you’ll be farther away from home.

3. Get creative with treadmill workouts. Yes, runners have teasingly nicknamed it “the dreadmill” but it doesn’t have to be that way. Working out on a treadmill means you can avoid injury that comes with slipping on icy streets– plus you have control over all elements: speed, incline, etc. Of course, many runners have the same idea. If the treadmill is busy, here’s what to do while waiting.

4. Deck yourself out in winter’s new gear. Motivation comes from the simplest of places. Ever notice that 2016_winter_running_shoestreating yourself to that piece of gear you’ve been eyeing makes you all the more excited to go running? Check out some of our favourite winter gear and shoes here.

5. Finish a run with nice winter stout. Hey, you got out during that snowstorm, ran through strong winds and possibly even had an embarrassing wipe out. You deserve some of the best stouts winter has to offer.

6. Run on vacation. Going away for the holidays? Most people like to plan which tourist spots they’ll visit beforehand as a way to get excited for the trip. Map out a few routes that you’d like to discover while away. Not only Winter running can be blissfulwill you get excited for the vacation, but having routes in mind will also help keep you on task while away from home.

7. Say hello to trails. Trails are not just for summer running. Make sure to dress properly for being out on the trails. Bring a pack and extra gear just in case and as with trail running in any season, bring along more fuel and water than you expect to use. Enjoy the snowy scenery!

8. Cook seasonal runner-friendly snacks. It’s inevitable that you’re going to be spending more hours indoors than usual– even if you’re an avid runner who runs high mileage every week. Use that time to cook or bake healthy runner-friendly food. Our orange chai energy balls have the taste of winter while being packed with the energy Fast_Girl_001content that runners need. Check out our recipe book for more ideas.

9. Cozy up with a running novel. Lawrence Hill’s new novel is out in stores right now. If you’re more of a non fiction kind of reader, Suzy Favor Hamilton recently released her memoir on her life as an Olympic runner turned high-end escort.

10. Try out a winter race. Sure, it’s not really race season, but there are tons of options for winter racing. That might mean signing up for a Santa run or a New Year’s Day event. Do something new this year.
