Another record-breaking weekend for Whitlock and Del Grande

Milton, Ont., masters superstar Ed Whitlock took down two more records on Sunday, Feb. 2.

Whitlock, who has become a popular figure in the Ontario track and road running communities, broke the world masters M80 record for the indoor mile by running 6:44:44. The previous mark of 6:48:02 was set in 2005 by John Keston of the United States. There was no previous Canadian record.

After his mile, Whitlock doubled back and ran the 4 x 800m relay with Chris Mackie, Vern Christensen and Jack Geddes. The four broke the M70 Canadian record in the event.

Whitlock, age 82, owns several age-class world records ranging in discipline from 800m to the marathon.

Karla Del Grande was also breaking masters records at the Toronto Track and Field Centre meet on Sunday, running 28.59 in the 200m to break the world M60 indoor record. The previous record, 28.94, was set by Philipa Raschker in 2007 .

Del Grande broke three M60 world masters records in the 100m, 200m and 400m at the world masters championships in October of 2013.
