Strava plans “Athletes Unfiltered” podcast

Time on your hands over the holidays? Here are a few running podcasts to try, either during your run or while waiting for dinner to cook (the new Strava pod drops January 10)

Does the world need another running podcast? Strava thinks it does. The fitness tracking app is about to unveil a new podcast entitled “Athletes Unfiltered,” for the runners and cyclists who use it. It will be hosted by The North Face-sponsored ultrarunner Hillary Allen and feature interviews with extraordinary athletes and athletes in extraordinary circumstances.

The first episode is scheduled to drop on January 10.

One of the first episodes will feature an interview with Gene Dykes, who recently broke the late Canadian marathoner Ed Whitlock‘s WMA M70 marathon record with his 2:54:23 performance in Jacksonville, Florida. According to the teaser on the Strava site, another will feature a female British runner who ran across America. It turns out a surprising number of British women have run across America, but we’re speculating it’s Mimi Anderson.

In terms of actual running podcasts (as opposed to more general, non-running-themed podcasts for passing the time on your long run), Strava has quite a lot of competition. But there’s always room for one more, right? Here’s a short list of some of the most popular running podcasts.

The Shakeout Podcast

Canadian Running’s own weekly podcast hosted by Kate Van Buskirk, Canadian record-holder in the indoor mile. Recent episodes include interviews with coach Dylan Wykes and chiropractor Kris Sheppard on how to run injury-free this winter, 2018 ACXC national champion Gen Lalonde, and 2018 NCAA champions Ben “Where’s My Mom?” Flanagan (10,000m) and Justyn Knight (indoor 5,000m).

Run Selfie Repeat

Hosted by Kelly Roberts, this podcast (which started as a blog, which is now called “She Can and She Did”) keeps the struggling female recreational runner pumped up with encouragement and inspiration. Roberts is definitely one of us, and she makes it OK to not be skinny, fast, or perpetually happy.

Ali on the Run Show

Ali is Ali Feller, another everywoman runner, based in New York, who now has an infant daughter, so is now more concerned than ever with the needs and interests of young running moms. Guests have included marathoners Des Linden, Stephanie Bruce, and Lauren Fleshman. Feller also has Crohn’s disease, and you can bet she covers some tough subjects (like being a runner and new mom with a chronic disease) with candour.

Rich Roll

Rich Roll is a vegan ultrarunner with a wide fan base and a very popular podcast by the same name. The pod speaks to extraordinary athletes in all sports (not just running) as well as non-athletes with inspiring messages, and is concerned with themes of mind and body health, the mental game, inspiration and spirituality. Recent guests have included ski racer Lindsey VonnJimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi (makers of the rock climbing doc “Free Solo”), and skateboarder Tony Hawk.

The Morning Shakeout

Not to be confused with CR’s The Shakeout Podcast (see above), The Morning Shakeout is hosted by San Francisco-based writer and running coach, Mario Fraioli. Recent guests have included trailrunning filmmaker Billy Yang, 2018 Boston Marathon champion Des Linden, and the Mayor of Running himself, Bart Yasso.
