Top Canadian results from the 2021 New York City Marathon

After a year of absence, the 50th running of the New York City Marathon took place on Sunday and several eager Canadians finally got the chance to lace up their shoes in the Big Apple. Led by our elite women, Canadians represented well south of the border, with many strong age-group performances. Here are your top Canadian results from the 2021 New York City Marathon.

Elite women

Without a doubt, the performance of the day came from Lanni Marchant, who, in her first marathon since the 2016 New York Marathon, ran 2:32:54 for 11th place. After struggling for years with a labral tear that required multiple surgeries to fix, many assumed Marchant’s elite running career was finished, but the 37-year-old clearly had other plans. After her big result on Sunday, Canadian fans everywhere will no doubt be watching to see what she does next.

Canada’s Lanni Marchant makes huge comeback at New York City Marathon

Rachel Hannah also ran a strong race and finished 16th in 2:39:15, followed by Kate Gustafson, who was 22nd in 2:45:48. Krista DuChene rounded out the Canadian elite women’s field, finishing 40th overall in the women’s race and 5th in her age group in 2:52:56.

Top 10 Canadians

Jonathan Bradnam of Welland, Ont. was the top Canadian male finisher in 2:39:31. This was good enough for 104th overall and 29th in the M30-34 age category, one of the most competitive categories in the marathon. A two-time cancer survivor, Bradnam tied his personal best down to the second, an impressive feat considering New York’s course is known for how challenging it is. 6. Jen Moroz: 242nd (32nd woman) in 2:49:25
7. Jean-Philippe Proulx: 299th (262nd man), 2:51:48
8. Krista DuChene: 326th (40th woman) in 2:52:56
9. Ryan Watt: 330th (290th man) in 2:53:07
10. Gary Frankland: 383rd (337th man) in 2:54:44

Canada saw 13 other runners finish in the top 20 in their age categories, including seven who finished in the top 10 and four who finished in the top five:

Josh Cassidy of Oakville, Ont. was Canada’s top wheelchair racer, finishing an impressive fourth place overall behind wheelchair marathon world record-holder Daniel Romanchuk of the U.S., and second in his age category in 1:40:38.
